Bill Richardson is currently running for President.

Moderator Notes:

The Cato Institute has consistently rated Richardson as one of the most fiscally responsible Democratic governors in the nation. As a presidential nominee, he would possibly become a lesser-of-evils candidate for lovers of liberty. He would be the diet coke of liberty.

One problem with Richardson as President is that an individual state would be deprived of the opportunity to choose true liberty. The Democratic Freedom Caucus has a principle that “government should not provide any services that can be provided adequately by the non-government sector.” We will not have the chance to prove how far we can go in a state if we continue with big government in DC acting like a nanny, even a frugal nanny. Many of us believe that given a chance to prove it, a truly free market can replace nearly every government service and make it drastically less expensive and much better. Government services mandated by the federal government tend to work out poorly no matter how honest, hard working, experienced or intelligent the president may be.

Specific Concerns
  • Opposes the Iraq war but supports other foreign interventionism.
  • Health Care: While his plan allows some free market choice, it is still new socialism that ultimately relies on coercion.
